Ultrasonic pest repellers are marketed as plug-in devices that emit high-frequency sound intended to make an area uncomfortable for pests.
The practical problem
“Pests” are not one biological category. Rodents, ants, cockroaches, spiders and mosquitoes sense and respond to the environment differently. A single plug-in device claiming broad control across unrelated species should therefore face a high evidence bar.
How to evaluate one
- Look for competent independent evidence for the exact pest, not a generic “laboratory tested” badge.
- Treat testimonials and temporary changes in activity as weak evidence.
- Do not let the device replace food/water control, sealing or validated traps/baits.
- Use a monitor — such as a sticky trap or activity log — so you can tell whether anything actually changed.

Do not build a pest-control plan around ultrasound alone. If you already own a device, it is reasonable to test it without abandoning proven prevention, but measure results and be willing to stop using it if activity does not decline.
A fair at-home test
- Before plugging the device in, record a baseline: trap counts, droppings, trail frequency or sightings over several days.
- Keep sanitation and other controls stable so you are not changing five variables at once.
- Install the device exactly as directed and continue the same monitoring.
- Compare the trend, not a single quiet night.
- If there is no meaningful decline, do not keep paying the opportunity cost of ignoring proven controls.
Why temporary avoidance can mislead
An animal may react to a new stimulus without permanently abandoning food, shelter or a nest. That means a short-term change in sightings is weaker evidence than sustained reduction measured with traps or other objective signs.
