Pantry clue: the package matters
Stored-product pests are often discovered as adults on counters or windows, but the real source may be a dry-food package. University of Minnesota Extension recommends examining susceptible food and removing infested material rather than treating the visible adults as the whole problem.
Carpet-beetle clue: adults and larvae tell different stories
Adult carpet beetles may simply wander indoors or gather at windows. The damaging stage is usually the larva, which can feed on materials of animal origin such as wool, fur and feathers. A single adult does not automatically mean a damaging infestation.
When the source may be hidden
Dermestid beetles can develop on dead insects, animal material or rodent food caches in voids. If you keep finding adults or larvae without a pantry or textile source, the inspection may need to expand to attics, wall voids, crawl spaces or pet-food storage.

Are all small brown beetles pantry pests?
No. Carpet beetles, larder beetles, wood-boring beetles and other insects can look similar. The food or material associated with them is a major clue.
